Our History

Bill and Lisa Benedict
Mike O’Connell

Our business started with a conversation back in November 2016, and then came to fruition in June 2017, when Mike O’Connell and the O’Connell family partnered with long time employees, Bill and Lisa Benedict, to form “O’Connell-Benedict Family Funeral Homes and Trusted Cremation Provider”. O’Connell-Benedict purchased the Cashman-Hill Funeral Home of River Falls, and the Hill Funeral Homes of Ellsworth and Prescott, from Scott and Stacy Hill on June 30, 2017.

With the formation of this unique partnership, O’Connell-Benedict brings decades of experience and the trusted reputation that the O’Connell family is known for throughout St. Croix County, to the greater Pierce County area.

O’Connell-Benedict Family Funeral Homes and Trusted Cremation Provider is just that… a true, family-owned funeral home, offering full-service traditional funerals and burials, along with the unique trait of being your local, trusted cremation provider. We bring to you the area’s only on-site crematory and are now the only funeral homes in Pierce County who can provide that level of dedication to you and your family. We’re confident that we are able to serve you best in your time of need, and look forward to being a part of the communities we serve.

The beginnings – In Hudson, WI, Baldwin, WI, and the surrounding communities, the O’Connells have built their family business on the long standing tradition of friends helping friends.

Frank O’ Connell
Tom O’Connell
Tom O’Connell and his family have a long history in mortuary science and funeral direction. The original O’Connell Furniture and Undertaking was started in Hudson in 1926 by Frank O’Connell, one of the first graduates of the University of Minnesota mortuary science program. His wife, Myra, took over the business following his untimely death at age 33. The family continued to operate the mortuary on Locust Street until it was sold
shortly after the end of World War II.

In 1985, Tom O’Connell, with over 30 years of experience in the mortuary science profession, re-introduced the family business to Hudson. A graduate of the same University of Minnesota program his uncle had completed, Tom opened a new, modern facility on 11th Street, (on the hill) in Hudson. Along with his sons, Dan and Mike (also graduates of the U of M), Tom proudly serves families in the St. Croix County area and beyond, raising the standard in funeral service.
