Edan Richard Laidlaw, age 14 of River Falls, WI, beloved son of Richard and Stephanie (Rutty) Laidlaw, died unexpectedly on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at his home. Edan was born January 31, 2005 in River Falls, and was baptized at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church. He was currently a freshman at River Falls High School.

Edan was active, musical, and athletic, and always had a smile on his face. He took piano lessons throughout grade school, and played the saxophone in the middle school band. Edan enjoyed hockey and soccer for many years in his youth, as well as basketball, and was a member of the Wildcat JV soccer team. He also enjoyed snowboarding and snowmobiling. Like other teenagers, Edan liked to play video games, be on his phone, and listen to music. He was a loyal and caring friend to others. Edan was happiest when he was with his friends, filling the room with smiles and laughter. Edan admired his brother and sister, looked up to them, and truly loved his time with them. He always looked forward to family vacations, holidays, and his birthday. Edan traveled to many destinations in this world with his family, and was so proud to earn his SCUBA certification last Christmas while in Roatán, Honduras. Those family memories were treasured by Edan. He had plans and goals for a bright future, and a family that loved him. In this tremendous sadness, all mourn the loss of Edan, and all that his future held for him.

Edan will remain in the hearts of his loving parents, Stephanie and Richard Laidlaw; sister, Cassandra; brother, Devlin; grandparents, John Rutty, and Careen & Denis Laidlaw; aunts and uncles: Annette Rutty, Andy Rutty, Jacquelyn (Brian) Smith, Timothy Rutty, Brett (Bev) Laidlaw, Toni (Graeme) Hoey, Judy (Graham) Boucher, Roslyn Mainz, and Paul (Belle) Laidlaw; cousins: Aurelia, Courtney, Erika, Danny, Jordan, Jacob, Belynda, Blayne, Ashley, Cameron, Dean, Travis and Demi. He is also survived by many other loving relatives, countless friends, and his faithful family companions, his dog, Dak and cat, Georgie.

Edan was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary Lou Rutty; and his aunt, Theresa Rutty.

Mass of Christian Burial for Edan Laidlaw will be held at 5:00 pm on Sunday, January 12th at St. Bridget Catholic Church, 211 E. Division Street in River Falls, with Rev. Fr. Jerry Harris officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Sunday, beginning at 2:00 pm until the start of Mass. A reception will immediately follow at the church. Private interment will take place.

In continuing with his caring ways, Edan gave the gift of life to others through organ and tissue donation.

Funeral services are entrusted to the O’Connell-Benedict Family Funeral Home of River Falls (715) 425-5644. www.oconnellbenedict.com

Tributes (31):

Please note: if you just submitted a tribute, it is pending approval.
  • Rich– I just saw the news, my brother. Words cannot express how sorry I am for you and your family. I was disappointed to see you were not going to be the other FO on my London trip Feb 1, as originally scheduled….and now I know why. Please take the words on this message board from the other AA pilot Kurt Anderson to heart. Those words are mine as well and I believe it whole heartedly that you will see your son again. I know it doesnt necessarily relieve the pain of today, and in the future, but it is HOPE and knowing that Edan is waiting for you and you and your wife and family will be with him again. Your loved brother

  • My condolences to the Laidlaw family. Richard and Stephanie, my heart goes out to you. I lost a brother 10 years ago, tomorrow he would have turned 54. Keep your eyes and hearts open as your son will always be with you.
    Peace

  • Richard, Stephanie, Cassie and Devlin,
I am so sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you grieve and remember Edan. The other night I brought out his favorite song on the piano, “Runaway Pablo”. I remember him telling me, “if I could play songs like this more often, maybe I’d practice more”. My response was “maybe if you practiced more, you’d get to play more songs like this”. Edan’s response was “touche’” followed by a laugh.
From coming with to his siblings lessons and playing with Drew ti the years I had as his piano teacher, I will miss his spunk and zest for life and his quick wit. May the memories of Edan and the love around you keep all of you during this difficult time.

Lara, Ross, Jaydon, Abby and Andrew Simonson
