Mary Ann Maier, age 93, lifelong resident of River Falls, WI, passed away January 23, 2020 at her home. Mary Ann was born May 10, 1926 to Joseph and Helen Tyler, and raised on a farm in the Bohemian settlement of Cherma. Mary Ann attended Forestville School, a rural one-room school house. She graduated from River Falls High School, the Class of 1944. After high school, Mary Ann worked at Montgomery Ward department store in the Twin Cities. She was united in marriage to Roman C. Maier on September 23, 1948. Their marriage was blessed with five children, Marlys, Diane, Don, Cathy and Tom. Mary Ann worked as a waitress at O’Brien’s Café and the Gladstone Hotel. She also worked for the River Falls Bakery and did house cleaning in the area.

Always loud, outgoing, and enthusiastic, Mary Ann was an active member of the River Falls community. After retirement, Mary Ann found great fulfillment working for the Green Thumb at Have-A-Heart, especially loving her work with children. She was a devoted member of St. Bridget Catholic Church, singing in the choirs, and active in various church groups throughout her life. Mary Ann was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was full of spunk that brought smiles and laughter, and unwavering caring that brought comfort to those she loved. She was a good friend to others, always thoughtful in maintaining relationships, and reaching out to those that needed a little extra caring. She enjoyed crafting, ceramics, and calligraphy. Mary Ann loved to sew, especially making her children’s clothes. Mary Ann delighted in collecting special moments and history by scrapbooking. She loved to garden, and worked hard canning the bounty of her homegrown produce. Mary Ann enjoyed her time in the kitchen cooking and baking, and truly made the best Christmas cookies and bars.

  • With deep sympathy to the family and friends of Mary Ann from the River Falls Garden Club. We were fortunate to have her as a member for many years, and I will miss her friendly presence at the annual plant sale that she faithfully attended until more recent years.

Personally I miss her from St. Bridget’s choir as well. She was always so easy to talk with and had such a nice smile. Rest in peace, Mary Ann.
